What a bookkeeper actually does for you

Short answer: A bookkeeper records and categorizes every transaction, reconciles your bank and credit card accounts to the statements, and produces a profit & loss and balance sheet each month. We do that in QuickBooks Online for a fixed fee of $300–750 a month, with payroll, sales tax, and tax returns available from the same firm.

Good books answer the questions you actually have: Did we make money last month? Can I afford to hire? What will I owe in taxes? They also make tax season a non-event, because your preparer starts from numbers that already tie out.

Common questions

What's the difference between a bookkeeper and a CPA?

A bookkeeper keeps the day-to-day financial records and produces monthly financial statements. A CPA is a licensed accountant who can perform audits, reviews, and other attest work. Many small businesses need a bookkeeper every month and a tax preparer once a year; few need attest services. We provide bookkeeping and tax preparation, and coordinate with a CPA when a bank or contract requires a CPA-issued report.

How much does small business bookkeeping cost?

Our fixed monthly fees are $300–350 for Essential, $350–450 for Professional, and $450–750 for Premium, depending on transaction volume and complexity. Payroll and sales tax are add-ons. You get an exact quote after we review your books.
